Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts can be seen in women at any age, but they are mostly observed in the reproductive age. When an ovarian cyst occured, it does not mean that you are infertile or you have cancer. Cysts form in certain periods of the menstrual cycle in most women and disappear in the next menstrual cycle. These are functional cysts and are harmless.

The diagnosis of cysts is usually made during routine controls. However, they can sometimes give clinical symptoms. These;

  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Painful periods
  • Groin pain
  • Urinary or bowel complaints
  • Dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Infertility
  • hirsutism
  • weight gain
  • There may be severe pain caused by the rupture of the cyst or the rotation of the cyst around itself (torsion).

Is My Ovarian Cyst Malign? Are am at Risk of Cancer? Do I Need to Have My Cyst Surgically Removed?

Of course, the definitive diagnosis of the cyst is only possible with pathology, but we do not want to remove every cyst with surgery and pathological diagnosis. The tumor markers (CA-125 etc.,) checked in the blood, the patient's age, complaint, whether or not they want a child, the size and the appearance of the cyst with ultrasound help us in making the surgery decision.

What are the Ovarian Cyst Types?

  • Functional cysts, Follicle Cysts
  • Endometrioma (Chocolate Cysts)
  • Dermoid Cyst (Teratoma)
  • Cystadenoma
  • Cancer

Do Ovarian Cysts Turn into Cancer? Do Ovarian Cysts Become Cancerous?

As we mentioned above, most of the ovarian cysts (80-85%) are functional cysts, that is, they are benign cysts. Cysts that appear in the post-menopausal period, grow rapidly, have an irregular structure on ultrasound, have white irregular areas (solid structure) and free fluid in the abdominal cavity, increase in size over time and persist for at least 2 months, are likely to be malignant. We recommend surgery for tehse cysts.

In addition to the examination and ultrasound, the increase in tumor marker level (such as CA-125) in blood, can help us in making the decision for surgery.

During the operation, your cyst is evaluated by the pathology specialist with the method we call frozen, and your cyst is definetely diagnosed. If your cyst is malignant, we can perform extensive surgery, including lymph nodes, during the surgery.

Which Surgical Method Should Be Used in Ovarian Cysts?

The surgeon's experience is very important in the decision of surgery. It is important to predict or suspect whether the cyst is malignant when deciding on surgery method. Closed or open surgery varies according to the surgeon's experience. In our clinic, we prefer cyst surgery with the closed method in every possible patient. Closed surgery, namely laparoscopy, is important in terms of accelerating the patient's recovery process, reducing pain, shortening the operation time, having fewer stitches and providing an aesthetic appearance after the surgery.

Removal of cysts by laparotomy, that is, open surgery, is a method that we prefer if the cyst is very large.
